A “tiered reading” takes an excerpt of real literature, makes progressively easier versions of it, and lets students walk through from a gentle conversation introducing a few of the words, to a version in simple language, to a slightly more complex version, to the original itself. By the time they arrive at the original, they should be able to read it with enjoyment, as literature.
Here is my tiered reading of the Annunciation story from the Vulgate Bible, which our Upper School Latin students read.
